The Story of Elmer the Patchwork Elephant is suitable for students to explore the theme and issues relating to the concept of diversity and uniqueness. Elmer discovers that when he tries to change his appearance in order to "blend in" with the other elephants, they no longer recognize him, or accept him as one of their own. After Elmer's "true colors" are revealed by rain, much to the surprise and delight of his friends, they realized they preferred his multicolored and fun loving personality better. Through the story, students will understand that the other elephants loved Elmer because of his special and unique appearance.

Elmer descubre que cuando intenta cambiar su apariencia para ser igual a los demas elefantes, ya no lo reconocen. Everyone mispronounces his Dinka name until he has the bright idea to make a picture of a sun and a soccer goal on his T-shirt. In our classroom, we both have some students who are new immigrants in United States, and they have their unique background and names.
Este libro es sobre un nino, Sangoel, de 8 anos que viene a vivir a Los Estados Unidos de Sudan. Todos sus companeros nuevos no sabes pronunciar su nombre, y el se ingenia una manera de ensenarles como decir su nombre basandose en fotos. En nuestro salon, tnemos bastantes immigrantes que podran tener sus propios nombres culturalmente diferentes.
